Traditional Tattoo Stencils

American traditional flash with heavy outlines and classic motifs: swallows, daggers, anchors, panthers and roses.

What makes a design traditional

  • Heavy, even outlines. The outline carries the whole design, so it is drawn thick and confident.
  • A small set of colours. Traditionally black, red, yellow and green, filled solid rather than blended.
  • Clear negative space. Skin is left showing between shapes so the tattoo stays readable as it ages.
  • Classic motifs. Swallows, anchors and ships come from sailor tattoos; panthers, daggers and roses are flash staples.

Colour areas on the stencil

These stencils show outlines only. Plan your colour areas on a second printout with coloured pencils before you start, so you know where solid black and colour go.

Questions

Why are the lines so thick?

Thick outlines are part of the traditional style, and they hold up well over time.

Can I add colour?

Yes. The stencil gives you the outline; colour is filled in afterwards inside the closed shapes.

Is the heart banner blank on purpose?

Yes. Write the name or word you want by hand on the printout before you transfer it.
